Shamshera released in cinemas on July 22 with a lot of expectations. Sadly, the big-budget action entertainer starring Ranbir Kapoor and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF) failed to pull significant crowds on day 1. Moreover, the word of mouth was outright negative and hence, it failed to grow over the weekend. The trend was flat and on the weekdays, it crashed. Shockingly, it will not even cross the collections of YRF’s last film, Samrat Prithviraj, which was also a big disaster.
What went wrong with Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera? Trade experts share their views
We asked trade experts what went wrong with Shamshera according to them. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Apart from a few individual sequences, there’s nothing in the film. It was writing of convenience.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan explained, “The story of a dacoit is outdated in today’s times. The film had not connected from the trailers itself. Today’s generation has become very smart. They could point out that these kinds of dresses were not there in the 1870s, especially the ones worn by Vaani Kapoor. Also, at the script level, it was flawed. Why were the Khamerans kept alive for 25 years? If the authorities hated them so much, they should have massacred them. And the character of Shuddh Singh is bewildering. 25 saal mein uski tarakki hi nahi hui. Woh wahin fort mein hi raha! Moreover, in those 25 years, not a single slave died, despite living in inhuman conditions. The makers also showed that the British had sympathy towards Indians but not an Indian towards their fellow Indians. No action sequence stood out. The film also suffered due to bad music.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, noted, “Audience could not make sense of the goings-on. When you transcend people into a larger-than-life scenario, you need to have some make-believe.”
Taran Adarsh also added, “It was riding on very high expectations. There’s nothing wrong with that but the problem is that it didn’t meet those expectations in terms of content, execution etc. Barring Ranbir Kapoor, nothing works. He was fantastic, no denying that. But the best of factors cannot really infuse life in a dead script.”
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi had a different point of view, “Shamshera starred Ranbir Kapoor in an absolutely mass-appealing film. Moreover, it was backed by a banner like Yash Raj and directed by Karan Malhotra, who has delivered a solid entertainer in Agneepath (2012). The expectations obviously were over the moon. When compared to those expectations, the film has underperformed. Having said that, how many films can we really think of in the last few months which have even done a Rs. 30 crores weekend? There have been equally big films with big stars, if not bigger, that have had lifetime collections as much as the weekend earnings of Shamshera.”
